Although easily accessed through the forested mountains the Pousada still retains the welcoming atmosphere of an isolated retreat. Dominating the town and looking down regally on the river is the convent and church of Sao Goncalo. Vila real 23 kms away is a small prosperous town which produces the famous mateus rose wine. The country home of the count of villa real is open to the public.
