The historic city of Canterbury has been a favourite with travellers since the time of Chaucer, and indeed the four-star County Hotel was first licensed as far back as 1588. Its history can be traced further back however, thanks to its 12th century cellars and 15th century timbers in the bar and lounge. In its time the County Hotel has been a private residence for one of the city's most prominent merchants, an inn, a banqueting hall for the corporation and a bank. In 1892 the building was converted to a hotel and has been providing guests with first class hospitality and service ever since. The County enjoys one of the finest locations in the city, right in the heart of the pedestrianised High street and less than five minutes walk from the Cathedral. At the rear of the Hotel, where weary travellers once tethered their horses, there is now a car park for 60 cars. The Hotel has 73 bedrooms have been recently refurbished.
